Where The Wild Things Are

The strange and beautiful world of Jaggery live at Oberon

By Victoria Wasylak

The Oberon Theater in Harvard Square has welcomed plenty of edgy acts over the years, but certainly nothing quite like Boston band Jaggery. Their unique brand of gothic chamber pop is sunshine and thunder — capable of producing whirlwind rock crescendos that snarl, bite and spit fire, just before slowing down to a calm breeze gentle enough to lull a baby to sleep. On June 12, the band recorded a live album at Oberon that plays with unmistakable originality, glittering musicianship and walks the line between genius and insanity that only the most adventurous dare to explore. Issue # 146 Zzajrant – Live Review, Seattle, WA

. . . Next up was a band from Boston that’s on an extended (30 day) tour of the country that they call their For The Record Tour… Jaggery had played Seattle before, though I was still in Hawaii when they were here last.  The lead for this group is fronted by a truly dynamic vocalist, Singer Mali . . . and when I say that, it is with all the respect one might imagine… the music they play keeps the “prog” in mind, but is more attuned to that “prog-opera” I mentioned earlier in this piece… though I’m not intimately familiar with all the terms proggers use to describe their music, the lead-off piece sounded (to me) like “wicked chamber dirge” – some of the most impressive and powerful high-range vocal work I’ve heard in years.  Let that not detract from the rest of the group, though… each and every piece & player fully understands the story they are telling – and they don’t get “in the way of each other”.  A very powerful set.

Look to your right for details on individual shows, or look at all the dates here & spread the word ~

& we hope to see many of you on the road!

Jaggery’s Dark Avant-Pop:

‘I Don’t Feel Like What I’m Doing Is Sinister’

by Amelia Mason

photo: Matt Samolis

Sometimes, during a performance with her band Jaggery, Singer Mali (aka Mali Sastri) will emerge from behind her black-lace-draped keyboard and creep into the crowd. Clad in a floor-length white gown—or a flowing black garment, depending on the day—she lurches and spits, tossing her long, inky hair and gesticulating with fluid abandon. As the band vamps, she slides effortlessly through several octaves, sneering in the lower registers and shrieking with startling precision in the upper. A combination of seductiveness and menace, she resembles something otherworldly, like a spirit called back from the afterlife, though perhaps one none too happy to be here.

WORCESTER TELEGRAM & GAZETTE ~ GIG REVIEW

To say Jaggery is unconventional is an exercise in understatement. The band, which that night comprised singer Mali on vocals and keyboard, [Dylan Jack] on percussion, Tony Leva on upright bass and Rachel Jayson on viola — creates an enormously thick tapestry of music that is at varying points both comfortable and hauntingly familiar, and alien and jarring.

Tucked behind her keyboard at center stage as she is, it’s arresting how much presence the thin-framed vocalist can muster. Her voice is enormous, a howl that’s textured and melismatic, words and syllables rattled through a run of notes, giving the band’s songs an incantatory feel.
